The first thing that you are going to do is activate your yeast. To do this, pour yeast packet in a bowl with the warm water and sugar. Mix well and let it sit for about 5 minutes until it starts to bubble.
Next, add the oil, salt and flour. Start with 3 cups of flour and add a few tablespoons at a time up to another 1/2 cup until you have a good bread dough consistency. Dough should not be too wet but should stick together well with no dry spots.
Knead dough either by hand or in a mixer for 10 minutes. My favorite way to do this is to use my kitchen aid stand mixer so that I can clean up my kitchen while the dough is kneading.
Place dough in a greased bowl, cover and let rise for about 2 hours or until its doubled in size.
Once the dough has risen, divide into 2 sections. Roll each section into a log shape that is about 12-15 inches long.Place each dough log onto a greased or parchment lined baking sheet. Cut 5 slashes diagonally into the tops of each loaf of bread.Beat egg in a bowl and add milk. Brush evenly on top of each loaf of bread. Let rise until they double in size. I found if placed in warm space this takes about 30 minutes.
Bake at 375 degrees for 25 minutes. Bread loaves should be nice and browned when they are done.
