To make bread or to buy bread?

Buying bread:

Buying bread to go along with your bread seasoning is a great option that takes some of that pressure off of your “to do” list! There are many stores with bakeries that sell already made baguettes that would be an excellent option to buy for this gift.

Another great option would be to check out the freezer selection at your grocery store! There are many fantastic brands that make frozen bread options that you could bake to give this gift a more homemade feel without all of the hassle.

Making your own bread:

Let’s be honest, there is nothing quite as good as a fresh, homemade loaf of bread! If you are able to, I would highly suggest baking your own bread to go along with the bread seasoning. You could even bake the bread ahead of time and keep it in your freezer until you are ready to gift it. I have done this many times with homemade breads and once thawed, they taste just as fresh as the day you baked it!

You can find the simple bread recipe that I used to make this gift down below!

Let’s bake some bread!

Ingredients:

  • 1 package (or 1 Tablespoon) of yeast
  • 1 cup of warm (not hot) water
  • 1 tablespoon of honey
  • 2 tablespoons of oil (I used avocado oil but you can use olive oil as well)
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 3 – 3 1/2 c all purpose flour
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons of milk

Direcitions:

The first thing that you are going to do is activate your yeast. To do this, pour yeast packet in a bowl with the warm water and sugar. Mix well and let it sit for about 5 minutes until it starts to bubble.

Next, add the oil, salt and flour. Start with 3 cups of flour and add a few tablespoons at a time up to another 1/2 cup until you have a good bread dough consistency. Dough should not be too wet but should stick together well with no dry spots.

Knead dough either by hand or in a mixer for 10 minutes. My favorite way to do this is to use my kitchen aid stand mixer so that I can clean up my kitchen while the dough is kneading.

Place dough in a greased bowl, cover and let rise for about 2 hours or until its doubled in size.

Once the dough has risen, divide into 2 sections. Roll each section into a log shape that is about 12-15 inches long.

Place each dough log onto a greased or parchment lined baking sheet.

Cut 5 slashes diagonally into the tops of each loaf of bread.

Beat egg in a bowl and add milk. Brush evenly on top of each loaf of bread.

Let rise until they double in size. I found if placed in warm space this takes about 30 minutes.

Bake at 375 degrees for 25 minutes. Bread loaves should be nice and browned when they are done.

Bread Seasoning

If you are going to be giving this bread seasoning as a gift, you can attach my free printable with instructions to give along with it!

If you will be eating the bread with dipping seasoning by yourself then you can follow the following instructions!

Ingredients:

  • 1 teaspoon dried oregeno
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Directions

Mix all dry ingredients together and pour into bag, jar, or whatever you would like to use to gift your bread seasoning.

Attach label provided or instruct recipient to add seasoning to 1/2 cup of extra virgin olive oil before serving.

Wrapping ideas:

To wrap the bread and make it look festive to give as a gift, I first used some plastic wrap to protect loaf.

Next, I used a tea towel with a Christmas print to wrap around the loaf of bread.

I used a small, plastic bag for my bread seasoning mixture. I poured mixture into the bag and folded it down and stapled it. (Please take note that no stray staples fall into seasoning! No one wants that surprise!)

I used a hole punch to punch a hole into the seasoning bag (making sure the plastic piece didn’t fall into seasoning, of course!)

Then I used some Christmas ribbon to wrap around the loaf and through the punched hole on the bread seasoning bag, tying a bow in the front.
